About Karen

Karen Shulman began photographing in 2007 while living on the ocean in Hull, MA.  There, the changing lightscapes and dramatic skies prompted her to chase perfect light and capture the spectrum of vivid hues she witnessed. She is a self taught artist encouraged by her mentor, Lance Keimig, to focus on her photography skills because of her innate natural eye.  While her interests have expanded to include cityscapes and street photography, she continues to seek the most expressive light in her composition.

Karen had her first solo show, “Window Dressing,” at the ACT for Art Gallery in Fort Myers, FL in February 2014. Her work has appeared in group shows in the Boston area, most recently three shows at the Griffin Museum of Photography: Winter Solstice Member Show, Harvey Stein’s Street Photography and, in March, 2014, Photography Atelier 19. Among the awards she has won are Best in Show from South Shore Art Association, Cohasset MA and honorable mention in the national show "The Art of Photography" in Plymouth MA.

Her work has been published 8 times in Still Point Art Quarterly and received the award in 2016 Spring issue Best Photograph "Ice Lagoon in Iceland" and 2017 Spring issue Best Interpretation of Theme "Green Gorillas". She is one of the 30 gallery artists listed in this publication.

East Coast Home and Design featured Karen as the featured artist in the October 2018 issue. The article told her story as a self taught artist and portrayed images of her work “Window Dressing”. http://eastcoasthomepublishing.com/digital-editions.html article starts on page 40.

She has sold over 18 pieces of her collection "Window Dressing" and they are displayed in homes and offices all over the country.  She is a permanent artist displayed in Judith Liegeois Design Gallery in Naples, Florida.

Karen has studied photography with Harvey Stein, Lance Keimig, Scott Martin, Alison Shaw and Karen Davis and attended workshops around the world including Scotland, Ireland, Iceland, Prague, Italy, Taos, New Mexico, and New York City.
